You know what? I’ve walked past Zur Krone probably a dozen times before I actually stayed there – it’s tucked right into this charming corner of Sibiu’s old town on Strada Ocnei, and honestly, from the outside it looks like one of those places that’s been there forever (in the best way possible). The entrance is sort of understated, which I actually love because it means you’re not dealing with tour groups constantly streaming through the lobby.
The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right – it’s got that old-world Transylvanian charm without feeling like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms are comfortable without being fancy, and I mean that as a compliment. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the main square where all the cafes spill out onto the cobblestones, but somehow the street noise doesn’t really carry into the rooms. I was there during the summer festival season when things get pretty lively, and I could barely hear the evening crowds. The staff actually knows the neighborhood – when I asked about finding decent Romanian food that wasn’t tourist-trap expensive, they sent me to this little place on Strada Turnului that I never would’ve found otherwise.
What really surprised me was how much thought they’d put into the small stuff. The WiFi actually works throughout the building (not always a given in these older buildings), and they’ve got this great little breakfast setup that changes based on what’s good at the local market. I’m usually pretty skeptical of hotel breakfasts, but they had these amazing local cheeses and the bread came from a bakery just around the corner – you could smell it being delivered in the morning. The whole place feels like it’s run by people who actually live in Sibiu and care about showing it off properly, rather than some chain that dropped in and slapped their standard template on everything. Plus, and this matters if you’re driving, they can help you figure out the old town parking situation, which is honestly a bit of a maze if you don’t know where you’re going. For a three-star place, it punches way above its weight – I’ve stayed in much more expensive hotels that felt way less thoughtful.
