You know what struck me first about ZRUB TRIXY? The name sounds quirky as hell, but honestly, this place is way more sophisticated than you’d expect from something called “Trixy.” It’s tucked right on Severná street in Veľká Lomnica – and I mean literally on the street where locals actually live and work, not some touristy strip. That’s actually part of its charm though. You’re staying in a real Slovak mountain town, not some sanitized resort bubble.
The 4-star rating feels about right, maybe even conservative. I’ve stayed in plenty of places with more stars that felt way more generic than this. What gets me is the attention to detail – like, the staff actually remembers your name after day one (rare these days), and the rooms have this perfect balance of mountain lodge coziness without feeling like you’re sleeping in someone’s hunting cabin. The beds are seriously comfortable too, which… look, I’m picky about mattresses, and I slept like a rock here. You can hear the Tatras in the distance if you open your windows at night – not traffic, not air conditioning units, just that subtle mountain quiet that makes you realize how much city noise you normally tune out.
What really sold me on this place is how it sits in Veľká Lomnica itself. Most people rush straight to the bigger resort towns, but this little spot is actually perfectly positioned if you know the area. You’re close enough to hit the major hiking trails and ski areas, but you’re also in this authentic Slovak village where you can grab coffee at the local café and actually chat with people who’ve lived here their whole lives. The hotel parking is solid – no scrambling for street spots or paying extra fees – and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. No upselling, no complicated key card systems, just “here’s your room, here’s what you need to know.” The 9 out of 10 rating from other guests makes total sense once you’ve been there a few days. It’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it’s exactly what you want when you’re using a place as your base for exploring the High Tatras region. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the whole place just smells right – like clean mountain air and wood, not chemical cleaning products or that weird hotel carpet smell you get sometimes.
