So I stumbled across ZET – Penzion & Wellness during a trip through the High Tatras, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from a place in tiny Vysne Ruzbachy. I mean, this village has maybe 1,000 people on a good day, right? But here’s the thing – sometimes the best finds are in these little Slovak mountain towns where you can actually pronounce half the street names.
The wellness part isn’t just marketing speak, which was refreshing. They’ve got this compact but really well-thought-out spa setup that uses the natural thermal springs the area’s known for. You know what struck me? The water actually has this slight mineral smell – not unpleasant, just authentic – and the locals will tell you people have been coming here for the waters since the 1800s. The pension itself feels more like staying at someone’s well-appointed mountain house than a typical hotel. My room had these thick wooden beams and windows that looked out toward the Belianske Tatras, and the whole place stays pretty quiet even when it’s full. Check-in was this lovely Slovak woman who switched to perfect English the moment she heard my accent, though she seemed genuinely pleased when I attempted a few Slovak phrases.
What really won me over was the location – Vysne Ruzbachy sits right at the edge of the national park, so you’re literally a ten-minute walk from hiking trails that most tourists never see because they stick to the crowded routes near Poprad. The breakfast (included, thankfully) featured local specialties alongside the usual European spread, and I actually learned what real Slovak bryndzové halušky should taste like. Parking’s free and right there, which matters when you’re driving mountain roads with a rental car. The place gets busy with Slovak and Polish families during summer weekends, but mid-week or off-season? You might have the thermal pools almost to yourself. Fair warning though – if you’re looking for nightlife or fancy restaurants within walking distance, this isn’t your spot. The nearest proper town is Kežmarok, about fifteen minutes by car. But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? Sometimes you want to be somewhere where the biggest decision is whether to soak in the thermal pool before or after your hike.
