You know what strikes you first about Za górami Za lasami? The name literally means “beyond the mountains, beyond the forests” – and honestly, that’s exactly how it feels when you finally wind up the hill to Wyskówki 5a. I mean, you’re technically still in Zakopane, but it’s tucked away from all the tourist chaos on Krupówki Street, which is actually perfect if you want to experience the real Tatra foothills without dodging selfie sticks every five minutes.
The location is sort of brilliant, actually. You’re up in the Wyskówki area where locals still live normal lives – there’s this tiny grocery store about a three-minute walk down the hill where the owner probably knows everyone’s coffee preferences, and you can see the Tatras from basically everywhere without having to crane your neck around souvenir shops. The walk into town takes maybe fifteen minutes if you’re feeling energetic, or there’s decent parking if you’ve got a rental car (which I’d recommend anyway for getting around the region). What I love is that you get these incredible mountain views right from the property, but at night it’s actually quiet – not like those places right in the center where you hear drunk tourists singing Polish folk songs until 2 AM.
The building itself has that authentic highland wooden architecture that you see all over Podhale region, but it doesn’t feel like someone’s trying too hard to be “folksy,” if you know what I mean. Inside, it’s comfortable in that unpretentious way – clean, warm, with those thick walls that keep mountain weather outside where it belongs. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star place, nothing fancy but everything works, and honestly the beds are better than some four-star places I’ve stayed at in Krakow. The hosts clearly know their stuff about the area too – they’ll tell you which trails are actually worth your time (skip the crowded route to Morskie Oko in summer, seriously) and where to get proper oscypek cheese that isn’t tourist-priced.
What really sold me though was sitting outside one evening in late September when the air had that crisp bite and you could smell wood smoke from chimneys down in the valley. The mountains were doing that thing where they turn purple-blue right before sunset, and I realized this is exactly what people come to Zakopane hoping to find – that authentic mountain experience without the crowds and commercialization. Sure, the place isn’t going to wow you with a spa or fancy restaurant, but that 9-point rating makes complete sense when you factor in the genuine warmth, the location that feels both secluded and accessible, and honestly just the relief of finding somewhere real in a town that can feel pretty touristy. If you’re looking for that authentic Tatra experience – morning coffee with mountain views, evening walks through actual neighborhoods, easy access to proper hiking trails – this is your spot.
