Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Willa pod Orłem on Piłsudskiego – the name translates to “Villa under the Eagle,” which sounds pretty grand for what’s essentially a cozy guesthouse tucked into one of Zakopane’s quieter residential streets. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you right off the bat.
The thing about this spot is that it gets the balance just right. You’re far enough from the chaos of Krupówki (that’s the main tourist drag, if you haven’t been) to actually sleep at night, but close enough that you can walk to all the good stuff without breaking a sweat. I mean, we’re talking maybe ten minutes to get to the heart of things, fifteen tops if you’re dawdling and window shopping. The owner clearly knows what they’re doing – parking is sorted (which, trust me, is not a given in Zakopane), and the whole place has this lived-in feel that’s way more comfortable than those sterile mountain resorts that charge twice as much. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully put together with actual wooden furniture that feels sturdy, not like it was assembled yesterday from a flat pack. And the views… well, let’s just say you’ll understand why they named it after an eagle once you see how it perches with sight lines toward the Tatras.
What really sold me though was the attention to those little details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days rather than just passing through. The wifi actually works (revolutionary concept, I know), there’s decent water pressure in the showers, and – this might sound weird but hear me out – the beds are the right height. You know how some places have beds so low you need a crane to get out of them, or so high you need a ladder? These are just… normal. Perfect for flopping down after a day of hiking or exploring the wooden architecture around town. The breakfast situation is solid too, though don’t expect some massive buffet – it’s more like what a Polish grandmother would put together if she really wanted to make sure you didn’t leave hungry. Actually, that whole vibe kind of sums up the place: it’s run by people who seem to genuinely care that you have a good time in their town, not just that you pay your bill and leave.
