You know what caught me off guard about Villa Holiday Tatry? It’s actually way better than you’d expect for a 3-star place tucked away on Lipová street in Nová Lesná. I mean, when you first pull up to this spot – and parking isn’t a nightmare here, which is honestly refreshing – it looks pleasant enough, but nothing too fancy. Then you step inside and realize these folks really know what they’re doing.
The thing about staying here is that you’re literally at the gateway to the High Tatras without dealing with the tourist circus of Poprad or the overpriced everything in Štrbské Pleso. Nová Lesná is one of those villages where you can actually hear yourself think, especially in the mornings when the only sounds are birds and maybe a neighbor chopping wood. The hotel sits perfectly positioned so you can walk to the local hiking trails (honestly, some of the best kept secrets in the region), but you’re also close enough to drive to the bigger attractions when you want them. Check-in was surprisingly smooth – the staff speak decent English, which… well, let’s just say that’s not always a given in smaller Slovak villages.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to nail that cozy mountain lodge feel without going overboard with the whole “rustic charm” thing. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nothing too fancy but everything works properly – and believe me, I’ve stayed in plenty of places where that wasn’t the case. The breakfast spread actually features local stuff alongside the usual hotel fare, and they make this incredible coffee that I’m still thinking about. The whole place has this lived-in warmth that feels genuine rather than manufactured. Plus, you can tell they care about maintenance – no squeaky floors or temperamental showers here. If you’re planning to visit during ski season, book early because locals know this place is a gem, and summer hikers are catching on too. It’s the kind of spot where you end up staying an extra night just because you don’t want to leave yet.
