Overview
You know what really struck me about Vila Ursul Negru? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to impress you, but somehow ends up being exactly what you need. I mean, the name literally means “Black Bear Villa” – and honestly, that should tell you everything about how refreshingly unpretentious this place is. It sits right on Strada Principală, which is basically Sovata’s main drag, but don’t worry about street noise because this part of town actually gets pretty quiet once the day-trippers head home.
The thing about Sovata is that most people just know it for the salt lakes – which, fair enough, they’re pretty incredible – but staying at Vila Ursul Negru puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to Lacul Ursu in like ten minutes, but far enough from the main tourist chaos to actually relax. The hotel itself has this sort of mountain lodge vibe that works perfectly with the surrounding hills. I was expecting typical 3-star stuff, but the rooms are actually quite thoughtful – decent Wi-Fi (which isn’t always a given in smaller Romanian towns), and the beds are properly comfortable, not just functional. The bathrooms are clean and modern enough, though the water pressure can be a bit moody in the mornings when everyone’s getting ready.
What really won me over, though, was the breakfast situation. They do this spread of local stuff – proper Romanian cheese, fresh bread, and they’ll make you eggs however you want them. The coffee’s actually decent too, which I wasn’t expecting. The staff genuinely seems to care about what they’re doing, and they know the area well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots. Like, they told me about this hiking trail that starts basically behind the hotel and takes you up into the hills – you get these amazing views over the whole Sovata valley, and I probably never would have found it otherwise. Parking’s free and right there, which is honestly a relief because finding a spot near the lakes during peak season can be a real headache. The whole place has this lived-in feeling that makes you want to stick around and explore the area properly, rather than just checking off the must-see list and moving on. For the price point, especially with that 8.9 rating, it’s one of those finds that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something genuinely good rather than just settling for whatever was available.

Staff was very friendly and helpful: they allowed us to check in earlier, then one of the ladies- she spoke German- came and gave us directions to the tourist area of town and suggestions for lunch locations, internet password. Breakfast was quite substantial!!!! I mean it. For a dinner or lunch close by -it is a pizza place advertisement on the street ( but has full restaurant menu) behind the corner few meters down the road - good prices, nice setting and clean. Hotel staff was really, really nice. Room has balcony with flowers.... love it ! overall very very good hotel and clean. Price, comparing with other B&B and hotels in that town, the best deal. Bus station is right there, also. We travel by bus while in Romania, so this detail was very important for us.
The booking process and communication with the hotel staff, via Booking.com, was seamless. All the steps I needed to take were communicated in advance and all my clarification questions were answered in a timely manner.
The room was big, modern and very clean. Same thing for the bathroom.
Based on other reviews I read: water not hot enough, room not warm enough, traffic noises if you stayed in a room facing the main road I was a bit skeptical but none of them were true for our room. We had hot water 24/7, same goes for the heat in the room. It was even too hot sometimes ;). And zero traffic noise as we had our room facing the main road.
The spa area was surprisingly nice, very clean, the pools had warm water and there were towels for each person. You can even have coffee or drinks at the pool which was nice.
Breakfast was delicios with a variety of items. Ham, cheese, vegetables, salads, cereal, coffee, tea, juices. For hot options, the buffet didn’t disappoint. Scrambled eggs, sausages, omelets, boiled eggs, toast, etc.
The room was very clean, breakfast was tasty, spa was ok. (little crowded, but that is normal on a saturday evening).
All in all, we were happy with this place :)
Clean, warm and cozy. Nice view from the balcony. Good breakfast, although there are few vegan options except some fresh veggies, bread and a couple of local appetizers.
There is a supermarket two blocks away and a bakery across the street, that opens at 7 or 7:30 AM.
There is a fridge, but no electric kettle.
Good breakfast, clean room, good location.
The room was lovely, with the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. It was incredibly well-maintained, and the breakfast was fabulous. The hotel offers plenty of parking spaces. I will always return to Vila Ursul Negru
Spacious and comfortable rooms, modern facilities, and generous breakfast. The location is super convenient, with easy access to local restaurants. Very friendly staff. Minor noises from the road. Huge car park
