Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Vila Svistovka in Stara Lesna – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet corner of Slovakia that most people drive right past on their way to the High Tatras. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not really looking for them. The place sits right there on the main road through the village, and while that might sound busy, Stara Lesna is the kind of place where “traffic” means maybe three cars an hour. What struck me first was how the building actually fits into the landscape – it’s not trying to be some flashy resort, just a solid, well-built hotel that looks like it belongs among all those pine trees.
The thing about this area is that you’re basically sitting in the foothills of the Tatras, so every morning you wake up to these incredible mountain views that change with the weather. I stayed here in late spring, and honestly, the staff seemed to genuinely know their stuff about hiking trails and local spots – not just the touristy ones everyone talks about, but the quieter paths where you might actually have some peace. The rooms are what I’d call properly comfortable without being fancy for the sake of it. Good beds, decent bathrooms, and thank god, reliable Wi-Fi (which isn’t always a given in smaller Slovak towns, trust me). The breakfast was actually pretty solid too – none of that stale pastry nonsense, but proper Slovak fare mixed with some international options. I appreciated that they didn’t blast music in the dining room; you could actually hear yourself think while planning your day.
What really won me over, though, was the location itself. Stara Lesna is one of those places that feels authentically Slovak without being touristy about it. You can walk to the local church in about five minutes, and there’s this little grocery store nearby where the owner will chat with you about the weather in broken English while his dog sleeps by the door. If you’re planning to explore the region – and honestly, why else would you be here – Vila Svistovka works perfectly as a base. You’re close enough to Poprad for train connections, but far enough from the crowds that descend on places like Smokovec. The staff helped me figure out bus schedules to some of the trailheads, and they actually knew which routes were less crowded on weekends. Sure, it’s not the kind of place you’d go just to hang out at the hotel, but that’s sort of the point. It’s comfortable, reliable, and run by people who seem to understand that most guests are here for the mountains, not the room service.
