The locals who run the place – and they genuinely care about giving you the real experience – will point you toward this little trail that leads up through the forest behind the citadel. It’s steep, sure, but the views over the Bârsa Valley are absolutely worth it. The whole area comes alive in different seasons too; I’ve heard from other travelers that spring brings wildflowers everywhere, while autumn turns the surrounding hills into this incredible patchwork of gold and red. Even in the quieter months, there’s something special about having the medieval streets practically to yourself.
