Overview
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Vila Kollár in Dolný Smokovec – honestly, the name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue if you’re not Slovak. But this place genuinely surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible. It sits right in the heart of Old Smokovec (that’s what the locals call Starý Smokovec), and you’re basically a five-minute walk from the cogwheel railway that takes you up to Hrebienok. The building itself has this understated elegance – not trying too hard to be fancy, but clearly someone put thought into the details. When you walk in, there’s this warm wood smell mixed with just a hint of mountain air that somehow makes it through the lobby.
What really got me was how the staff actually knows the area. I mean, they’re not just reading from some tourist pamphlet – they’ll tell you which hiking trail to take if your knees are acting up, or where to grab the best halušky without paying tourist prices (it’s not in the hotel restaurant, by the way, though theirs isn’t bad). The rooms are solid – nothing revolutionary, but the beds are proper comfortable and the bathrooms actually have decent water pressure, which honestly can be hit or miss in this part of the Tatras. The mountain views from the upper floors are pretty spectacular, especially early morning when the peaks catch that golden light. Fair warning though – if you’re here during peak summer or ski season, it gets busy. The parking situation can be a bit tight, but there’s usually space if you’re not rolling in at 6 PM with everyone else.
Here’s the thing that sets Vila Kollár apart from some of the other places I’ve stayed in the High Tatras – it feels like they actually care about getting the small stuff right. The WiFi works (shocking, I know), breakfast has local options alongside the standard hotel fare, and they don’t give you that plastic key card that stops working every time you look at it wrong. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned for both the serious hiking crowd and families who just want to ride the funicular and take some photos. The Skok waterfall is about a 20-minute walk if you take the forest path behind the hotel, and most tourists miss it completely because they stick to the main trails. During winter, you can practically ski to your door – well, almost. The Starý Smokovec ski area isn’t huge, but it’s great for intermediate skiers and way less crowded than some of the bigger resorts. Bottom line: this isn’t the flashiest place in the Tatras, but it’s the kind of spot where you actually sleep well and wake up excited to explore, rather than spending half your morning dealing with hotel hassles.

Location, view, very clean, great host!
It was all over a wonderful experience! The place is even nicer in reality, very clean & comfortable.
Everything went smoothly & the hosts are super kind!
We can only recommend it & look forward to coming back soon :)
We stayed at the apartment with the terrace and loved every moment.
The apartment is spacious , very well occupied kitchen with everything you would need to fix meals.
The bathroom was big and clean.
The hostess were very kind and generous: lots of coffee capsules for the coffee machine, fresh croissants, wine and other treats.
The apartment is located 5 minutes drive from Tatranaska lumnica and stary Smokovec (cabel car, funicular, restaurant and attractions).
Excellent stay for our family, great location, clean, tasty breakfast ! Highly recommended for a stay in the High Tatras.
Tha apartment is very spacious, comfortable and cozy. You can find everything you need for your stay. It has automatic Velux windows with the mountain view. Pets are allowed - that was very important for us.
The apartment has everything you need. It has a fully equipped kitchen, with all necessary cutlery, pots and pans. They even left some groceries that were available for use. The couch was comfy, the view was great, and it was a pleasant experience. There was a lot of public space around the villa that we could take our dogs to - either for their needs or just for a walk.
It's a 30-minute drive to Stbrske Pleso, and almost everything else is within a 10-minute drive.
Very nice and helpful owner, plus Peter speaks hungarian as well, good location, absolutely super apartment.
Amazing people Peter and his lovely wife, Susane (i hope i said it right). Room is big very well designed and equipped: everything to prepare food with, Netflix in the cozy living room, amazing breakfast and everything is new and we'll decorated. It appears that it's a renovated building.
But the main thing is the attitude, explanations, availability of the the lovely hosts. A small example: I needed a pharmacy and asked is it open on weekends? They were willing to go there and assist me... Amazing...
Everything was perfect! The owners are very welcome and helpful - we were bothering them every day... The location is fantastic (in front of Tatras), in the unique village, very quiet and peaceful. In a walking distance from Stary Smokovec (there's a nice path next to the road). Train station few minutes walk from the apartments. Good location to travel aroud and go to different hiking trails. The apartments are newly refurbished, very stylish. Beds are very comfortable, bed linen decent. You have everything you need: washing machine, small kitchen, fridge, all the toiletries, kitchen equipment, big TV (even Netflix). Will reccommend to our friends and hope to come back next year.
Lovely room with a great view, very comfortable. It was close enough to walk to town on a nice path nearby, or 2 minutes walk to the train. The staff were amazing, we dealt with Peter and he was super helpful and a great communicator. Would definitely stay here again!
