What I really appreciated was the little touches that show someone who gets what travelers need – decent Wi-Fi (tested it thoroughly), blackout curtains that actually block light, and hot water that doesn’t run out after five minutes. The beds are comfortable too, though I’ll be honest, the pillows are a bit on the firm side if that matters to you.

Here’s the thing about staying in Dolný Smokovec that a lot of people don’t realize – you’re literally a ten-minute walk from the funicular that takes you up to Hrebienok, but without the crowds that camp out in the main village center. I’d walk past Vila Kollár in the evenings and see other guests sitting on their little balconies with a glass of wine, looking completely relaxed in a way that tells you they’d figured out this was a good find. The whole area quiets down nicely after dinner time, but you’re close enough to pop over to one of the local restaurants – there’s this family-run place about five minutes away that does incredible goulash, though the name escapes me now. During peak season it gets busier obviously, but even then it maintains that peaceful mountain retreat vibe that’s getting harder to find. If you’re the type who wants to actually unwind in the mountains rather than just check them off a list, this place gets it right in all the ways that matter.
