Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in the High Tatras, but Vila Halfway honestly surprised me in the best possible way. The name doesn’t sound like much – I mean, “Halfway” isn’t exactly romantic – but it’s actually perfect because that’s literally what this place is. You’re halfway between the chaos of Poprad and the tourist madness up at the peaks, sitting right in Veľká Lomnica where locals still outnumber the tour groups.
The location on Kamenná street is quietly brilliant. You can walk to the railway station in about five minutes (crucial if you’re planning day trips to Skalnaté pleso), but you’re tucked away enough that you’re not hearing trains all night. What really got me was how the staff – and I think the owner was around too – actually knew the hiking trails. Not just the obvious ones everyone does, but the quieter routes where you won’t be dodging selfie sticks every ten meters. They pointed me toward this path that starts basically behind the hotel and connects to the green trail system, which honestly, most visitors never figure out exists.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, but there are these little touches that show someone actually thought about what travelers need. The bathroom had this rainfall shower that worked properly (you know how hotel showers can be), and they’d put in decent blackout curtains – essential when the sun comes up stupidly early in summer. I was there in late June and could hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which for Slovakia is actually pretty remarkable. The WiFi worked throughout the building, even in the garden area where I ended up working one morning with coffee. Speaking of coffee, they serve a proper Slovak breakfast with local cheeses and meats, not the generic continental spread you get at chain places.
What struck me most was how the place feels lived-in rather than sterile. The common areas have books in multiple languages, and there’s this huge detailed map of the region on the wall where previous guests had marked their favorite spots with little pins. I spent probably twenty minutes just studying it and ended up changing my whole itinerary based on what I saw there. The garden area out back is genuinely lovely – you can see the mountains on clear days, and it’s where locals seem to stop by for drinks in the evening, which always tells you something about a place. Parking was straightforward and free, which around here isn’t a given. Honestly, if you’re planning to explore this part of Slovakia properly rather than just tick off the famous spots, Vila Halfway gives you the perfect base. It’s the kind of place you’d actually want to come back to, and in the Tatras, that’s saying something.
