The woman at reception (I think her name was Maria?) didn’t just hand me a generic map – she marked out the easier paths to the lake and mentioned which spots get crowded with day-trippers from Gheorgheni. That kind of local insight is gold when you’re trying to avoid the tour bus crowds. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough, though the walls are a bit thin so you might hear your neighbors if they’re early risers. Parking is right there, which is clutch because the mountain roads can be tricky and you don’t want to worry about finding a spot after a long drive from Cluj or Bucharest.

I mean, let’s be real – this isn’t luxury accommodation, but it’s exactly what you want for exploring the Harghita Mountains. The breakfast was surprisingly good (proper Romanian stuff, not just packaged pastries), and honestly, you’re probably going to spend most of your time outside anyway. The whole Red Lake area gets pretty busy during summer weekends, but Vila Gal sits just far enough from the main tourist strip that it stays relatively quiet. If you’re hiking the Suhardul Mic or heading up to the Bicaz Gorge, the location is actually perfect – you can start early and beat the crowds, then come back for a proper meal.
