You know what struck me first about Dom Hillside? It’s tucked away on this quiet stretch of Wierch street in Gliczarów – honestly, I almost missed the turn because the GPS got a bit confused with the Polish address formatting. But once you wind up that little hill (hence the name, I guess), you’re rewarded with this genuinely charming place that feels way more personal than your typical 4-star setup. The owner – I think his name was Marek – actually came out to help with our bags, which was unexpected but really appreciated after that drive through the mountains.
The thing about this part of southern Poland is that you’re right in the sweet spot between the Tatra foothills and all those gorgeous hiking trails, but Dom Hillside manages to feel like a proper retreat rather than just another mountain lodge packed with tour groups. The rooms are honestly better than I expected – clean lines, decent-sized bathrooms, and these big windows that frame the valley views perfectly. I mean, sure, the Wi-Fi was a bit spotty on the upper floors (seems to be a thing in this region), but honestly? That forced digital detox was probably good for us. What really impressed me was the attention to small details – they had local honey at breakfast, the coffee was actually good (not that instant stuff you sometimes get), and someone clearly put thought into the lighting because everything felt warm and inviting, especially in the evenings.
The location is what really sells it though. You’re maybe fifteen minutes from the main Zakopane tourist madness, but far enough away that you can actually hear yourself think. There’s this little trail that starts basically from their back garden – nothing too strenuous, perfect for morning walks before the day heats up. And if you’re into the whole mountain biking scene, the staff seemed to know all the good routes (there’s apparently some single-track that connects to the bigger trail system). Parking was never an issue, which is honestly a relief because some places in this area… well, let’s just say they’re not designed for modern cars. The breakfast room gets busy between 8 and 9, but arrive a bit earlier or later and you’ll have those mountain views mostly to yourself. For what you’re paying – and considering you’re getting proper Polish hospitality without the tourist markup – it’s actually solid value. Just don’t expect spa amenities or a concierge desk; this is more about comfortable beds, good food, and being perfectly positioned to explore the region without fighting crowds.
