You know what really surprised me about Transylvania House? It’s not at all what you’d expect from the name – I mean, sure, you’re technically in Transylvania, but this place feels more like a cozy mountain retreat than some gothic castle. The location on DN75 is actually perfect if you’re planning to explore the Apuseni Mountains, and honestly, most people don’t realize how close you are to some incredible hiking trails until they get there.

The thing that strikes you first is just how quiet it gets at night – like, properly quiet in a way that city folks forget exists. During the day though, there’s this gentle hum of activity from the village below, and you can actually hear the Arieș River if you listen for it. The staff here really knows their stuff too; they’ll tell you which trails are doable after rain (spoiler: not many) and where to grab supplies in Arieșeni village before you head out. I appreciated that they didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – the woman at reception actually drew on mine to show me a shortcut to the waterfall that cuts about an hour off the hike.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to feel genuinely local without being rustic to the point of inconvenience. The rooms are properly comfortable – good heating, reliable hot water, and windows that actually open wide enough to let in that crisp mountain air. The breakfast spread includes local honey and cheese that you can’t get in Bucharest, and they’ll pack you a lunch if you’re heading out early. Parking is right there, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with mountain weather. The 9.4 rating makes sense when you consider it’s not trying to be something it’s not – it’s just a really solid base for exploring this part of Romania that happens to be run by people who actually care about what they’re doing. If you’re the type who needs a spa and room service, look elsewhere, but if you want a place that feels authentic and gives you easy access to some of the best hiking in the country, this is it.
