Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Zakopane over the years, but The Sopa actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen much anymore. It’s tucked away on Jaszczurówka, which means you’re far enough from the tourist chaos on Krupówki street to actually sleep at night, but close enough that you can walk to everything without breaking a sweat. The location is sort of perfect, actually – you know how most heritage places either stick you in the dead center where it’s all noise and pierogi stands, or way out where you need a car for everything? This hits that sweet spot.
The houses themselves (there are several buildings, not just one big hotel block) have this genuinely old-school Zakopane vibe without feeling like a museum. I mean, you can tell they put serious money into restoring these places – the wood details are gorgeous, and whoever did the interior design actually understood what makes Góral architecture special instead of just slapping some generic “mountain chic” nonsense together. My room had these thick wooden beams overhead and windows that actually opened properly, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how many places nail that shut. The beds are proper comfortable too – I slept better than I had in weeks, and that’s after hiking Gubałówka the day before.
What really sold me though was the breakfast situation and how the staff handled things. The morning spread isn’t huge, but everything’s clearly local and fresh – proper oscypek cheese, bread that’s actually baked somewhere nearby, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a machine. Plus the woman at reception (I think her name was Anna?) knew exactly which trails were muddy after the rain and which bus to catch to Morskie Oko without the usual tourist trap routes. You know what I’m talking about – that insider knowledge you can’t fake. Parking was easy too, which in Zakopane during summer is basically a miracle. The whole place just runs smoothly without that overly polished hotel feeling that makes you afraid to touch anything. Honestly, for a 4-star place with a 9 rating, I was expecting to find some catch – maybe tiny rooms or sketchy wifi or that weird smell old buildings sometimes have. But no, it’s just… really well done. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels authentically Zakopane but doesn’t make you rough it, this is your spot.
