Honestly, when I first walked up to Tatratour on Witkiewicza Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place – but man, was I wrong. This little apartment hotel sits right in the heart of Zakopane’s action, and I mean literally a few minutes’ walk from Krupówki (you know, that pedestrian street where everyone ends up buying way too much oscypek cheese). The building itself has that solid mountain town feel – nothing fancy, but you can tell it’s been thoughtfully maintained by people who actually care about the place.
What really got me was how the owners – and I’m pretty sure they’re actual mountain guides based on the name and all the climbing gear I spotted in the lobby – have set this up like they’d want to stay there themselves. The apartments are way more spacious than most hotel rooms you’ll find in Zakopane, especially during peak season when everything’s packed. I had a corner unit that looked out toward the Tatras, and honestly, waking up to that view with a cup of coffee never got old. The kitchen setup is actually functional too – I mean, you can cook a real meal here, not just reheat instant noodles. Super handy when you’re planning early morning hikes and want to grab breakfast before hitting the trails.
The whole vibe feels very local, if that makes sense. You’re not dealing with some corporate hotel chain nonsense – these folks know Zakopane inside and out, and they’re genuinely helpful about trail conditions, weather, where to eat (skip the touristy spots on Krupówki and head to where they send you instead). Parking was surprisingly stress-free, which anyone who’s driven around Zakopane in summer will appreciate. The neighborhood’s pretty quiet at night too, even though you’re close enough to walk to everything. I stayed there in both winter and late spring, and while winter’s obviously busier and more expensive everywhere in Zakopane, the spring visit was absolutely perfect – fewer crowds, great hiking weather, and you could actually hear the birds in the morning instead of tour buses rumbling past. The 9-star rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not luxury, but it delivers exactly what you need for a proper mountain town stay without any of the pretentious hotel stuff that would feel out of place here anyway.
