Studio Sonia – Tordosan Central – #1
Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of places around Sibiu’s Old Town, and Studio Sonia honestly surprised me in the best way. You know how sometimes you book a 3-star place and keep your expectations low? Well, this little gem on Strada Victor Tordășianu actually punches way above its weight class. The building itself has that classic Romanian character – thick walls that keep things wonderfully quiet even though you’re literally in the heart of the old town. When I first walked in, I was struck by how they’ve managed to blend modern comfort with the historic feel of the neighborhood. The studio setup is smart too – not cramped like some places I’ve endured, but efficiently designed so everything you need is within reach.
What really won me over was the location, and I mean the real practical stuff, not just the tourist brochure version. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from the main square (Piața Mare), but here’s the thing – you’re on a side street that doesn’t get hammered with tourist foot traffic all day and night. I could actually sleep with the windows open, which is rare in old town centers. The morning sounds are gentle – maybe some birds, the occasional local heading to work – instead of drunk tourists stumbling back at 2 AM. Parking was way easier than I expected too; there’s street parking nearby, and honestly, the locals seem to know which spots work and which don’t. The woman at check-in (I think she might be Sonia herself, though I didn’t ask) gave me this whole rundown of where to park, which bakery opens earliest, even warned me that the church bells are enthusiastic on Sunday mornings.
What keeps sticking with me is how the place feels lived-in rather than sterile. The furniture isn’t brand new, but it’s comfortable and everything works properly – the shower has actual water pressure, the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every ten minutes, the heating responds when you adjust it. These might sound like small things, but after you’ve stayed in places where nothing quite functions right, you really appreciate when someone’s paying attention to the details. The kitchenette is compact but thoughtful; they’ve got decent knives, pots that aren’t warped, even a coffee maker that produces something drinkable. I ended up cooking a couple of simple meals there, partly because I wanted to, partly because I’d discovered this great little market just around the corner. That 8.4 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it’s exactly what you want when you’re exploring a city like Sibiu. You get a genuine taste of living in the old town without the tourist markup, and honestly, that’s worth more than fancy amenities you’ll never use.
