I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Sidharta Resort on DN7A, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place tucked away in Obarsia-Lotrului. I mean, the drive through the Carpathians is gorgeous, but this little village feels like it’s at the edge of the world. Boy, was I wrong about underestimating this place.

The thing about Sidharta is that it gets all the fundamentals right in ways that actually matter. The check-in was smooth (they speak decent English, which honestly surprised me), and parking is right there – no hunting around narrow streets like you get in some mountain towns. What really struck me was how they’ve managed to blend that traditional Romanian mountain lodge feeling with modern comfort. The rooms are clean and well-maintained, nothing fancy but everything works properly. You know that feeling when you can tell someone actually cares about the details? That’s what you get here. The WiFi actually works throughout the property, which is more than I can say for some supposedly upscale places I’ve stayed at in Bucharest.

But here’s what makes Sidharta special – it’s the location and the people who run it. You’re literally minutes from the Transalpina highway, which locals call “the road to the sky” for good reason. The staff knows this area inside and out, and they’ll point you toward hiking trails that most tourists never find. I spent an evening just sitting on their terrace, watching the mist roll through the valley while sipping țuică (Romanian plum brandy) they offered – it’s those unplanned moments that make a trip memorable. The breakfast is hearty, mountain-style food that’ll fuel you for a day of exploring, not some sad continental buffet. During peak season (July-August), you’ll want to book ahead because word has gotten out about this place, but even then it never feels crowded or rushed. The 9.8 rating makes sense when you realize they’re doing hospitality the old-school way – treating guests like people, not room numbers. If you’re using this as a base for exploring the Carpathians or just need a genuine break from city life, Sidharta delivers that authentic Romanian mountain experience without the tourist trap nonsense.
