Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from RV Apartment Onyx when I first rolled up to Starý Smokovec – the name sounds a bit industrial, doesn’t it? But this place surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked right into the heart of this charming Slovak mountain town, and you know what struck me first? The smell of pine and that crisp mountain air that hits you the moment you step out of your car. The building itself has this sleek, modern feel that somehow doesn’t clash with the traditional alpine vibe of the area – actually, it’s kind of refreshing.
The location is pretty brilliant, I have to say. You’re literally a stone’s throw from the cogwheel railway station (locals just call it “the rack railway”), which means you can hop on and head up to the High Tatras without dealing with parking nightmares or winding mountain roads. I mean, sure, you could drive, but why stress yourself out? The apartment itself feels more like staying at a friend’s really nice place than a typical hotel room – there’s actual space to spread out, a proper kitchen if you want to grab groceries from the little Tesco down the hill, and windows that frame the mountains like living postcards. The décor leans contemporary without being cold, lots of clean lines and that onyx-inspired color scheme that actually works.
What I really appreciated – and this might sound weird – is how quiet it gets at night. Starý Smokovec isn’t exactly a party town (thank goodness), but even the daytime tourist chatter fades away after dinner, leaving you with just the sound of wind through the spruces. The staff clearly knows their stuff about the area too; they gave me the inside scoop on which hiking trails to hit early before the tour groups arrive, and which local restaurants actually serve decent food versus just tourist trap schnitzel. Oh, and parking is included, which might not sound like much until you’ve tried finding a spot in these narrow mountain streets during peak season. The only tiny gripe I had was that the Wi-Fi got a bit spotty during heavy weather – but honestly, being slightly disconnected in a place this beautiful isn’t exactly a hardship. This isn’t your cookie-cutter mountain lodge experience; it’s more sophisticated than that, but still feels authentically Slovak. If you’re the type who wants to actually experience the Tatras rather than just snap photos and leave, this place gets it.
