I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Hotel Rubin on Piața Crișan, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place tucked into this quiet corner of Sibiu’s old town. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little gem really grew on me during my stay.
The thing about Rubin is that it sits in this perfect sweet spot where you’re actually living like a local rather than being stuck in some tourist bubble. Piața Crișan isn’t one of those squares that’s crawling with tour groups – it’s got that authentic neighborhood feel where you’ll see Romanian families heading to the corner shop and old-timers sitting on benches chatting in the evening. The hotel itself has this understated charm that feels more like staying at a well-kept pension than a typical hotel. I mean, don’t expect marble lobbies or anything fancy, but the rooms are genuinely comfortable and surprisingly quiet considering you’re right in the city center. The staff actually remembers your name after the first day, which is rare these days.
What really sold me on the place was how effortlessly you can explore Sibiu from here. You’re maybe a 7-8 minute walk to the main tourist strips around Piața Mare and Piața Mică, but far enough away that you escape the evening crowds and restaurant noise. I’d usually grab coffee from that little café on Strada Nicolae Bălcescu in the morning, then wander through the cobblestone streets without feeling rushed. The whole Centrul Vechi is walkable from Rubin, honestly – I never once needed a taxi or bus to get anywhere interesting. Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving (the old town streets are narrow and confusing), but the hotel staff knows all the tricks and side streets where you can actually find a spot. That 8.6 rating makes total sense to me because while it’s not luxury, everything just works the way it should. The Wi-Fi is solid, the beds are comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep, and the whole place feels clean and well-maintained without being sterile. Plus, and this might sound silly, but I loved hearing the church bells in the morning and the gentle hum of the neighborhood waking up – it felt authentically Transylvanian in a way that bigger hotels can’t replicate.
