Riviera by Queens Hotel and Resort
So I ended up at the Riviera by Queens Hotel and Resort in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, and honestly? It’s one of those places that grows on you. First impression walking in was pretty solid – nothing too fancy, but clean and welcoming in that unpretentious way that actually makes you relax instead of worrying about tracking mud on some pristine marble floor.
The location is interesting because you’re right on Calea Timișoarei, which means you get that perfect balance of being accessible without dealing with the chaos of the city center. I mean, you’re literally on the DN6 – that main artery that connects everything – so getting around is actually straightforward once you figure out the local traffic patterns. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night despite being on a main road. The building seems to buffer the noise pretty well, and by 10 PM it’s peaceful enough that you can sleep with the windows cracked open if you want that fresh air from the Danube valley.
You know what really surprised me? The staff genuinely seemed to know the area. I asked about getting to the Iron Gates (because, come on, you can’t be this close to one of Europe’s most dramatic river gorges and not go), and instead of just pointing me toward the tourist office, the guy at the front desk actually drew me a little map showing which viewpoints are worth the climb and which ones are just okay. That kind of local insight is gold when you’re trying to make the most of a short stay. The rooms are comfortable enough – I’d say they hit that sweet spot between basic and nice. The shower had decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than thread count when you’ve been hiking around ancient Roman ruins all day. Wi-Fi worked fine throughout the building, though it did get a bit sluggish during what I assume were peak hours.
The restaurant situation is pretty typical for a 3-star place – nothing groundbreaking, but they do a solid job with regional dishes, and the breakfast spread kept me going through some pretty full sightseeing days. I particularly liked that they had local cheeses and not just the generic hotel buffet stuff. Parking was straightforward, which is a bigger deal than you might think in this part of Romania where some older hotels make you play automotive Tetris just to leave your car overnight. The whole place has this relaxed, family-run feel even though it’s clearly a proper hotel operation. It’s the kind of spot where you can come back from a day exploring Drobeta-Turnu Severin’s fortress ruins or taking that day trip to the Danube’s narrowest point, and just decompress without feeling like you need to dress up for the lobby. For the price point and the location, it delivers exactly what it promises – a comfortable base for exploring this underrated corner of Romania without any pretense or hassle.
