You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Rezidencia Woodchalet – I mean, it’s tucked away in this golf resort area near Veľká Lomnica, and honestly, the name made me think it might be some generic ski lodge trying too hard. But walking up to the place, you immediately get why it’s earned that 9 rating. The building actually looks like what you’d imagine a proper Slovak mountain chalet should be – lots of warm wood, but done in a way that feels genuinely upscale rather than kitschy. The whole Tatranská Black Stork Golf Resort setting is pretty spectacular too, especially if you’re into that whole “wake up to mountain views” thing (and let’s be real, who isn’t?).
What really struck me was how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between feeling fancy and actually being comfortable. The rooms have this cozy-but-sophisticated vibe – think exposed wooden beams but with really good lighting and none of that scratchy traditional fabric you sometimes get stuck with in mountain hotels. The beds are seriously comfortable, which matters more than you’d think after a day of hiking around the High Tatras. And here’s a detail that’ll matter if you’re traveling in summer – the rooms stay cool even when it’s warm outside, probably because of all that wood construction. I stayed during peak hiking season and never felt like I was suffocating, which has definitely been an issue at other places in the area.
Being right in the golf resort means you’re about a fifteen-minute drive from the main Veľká Lomnica area, which is actually perfect if you ask me. Close enough to grab dinner at some of the local spots (there’s this great traditional place called Koliba that’s worth the short drive), but far enough that you’re not dealing with tourist crowds right outside your window. The resort itself has everything you need if you don’t feel like venturing out – decent restaurant, and obviously the golf course if that’s your thing. But honestly, the real draw is using this as your base for exploring the Tatras. You’re incredibly well-positioned for day trips to Skalnaté pleso or even over to Štrbské pleso, and the staff actually knows the hiking trails well enough to give you real advice, not just hand you a generic map. Parking’s easy and free, which is more of a relief than it should be in this part of Slovakia. I’d definitely come back – it’s one of those places that just gets the basics right while still feeling like somewhere special.
