The hotel’s just a few minutes’ walk from the station, which I didn’t realize until I saw other guests heading out with their hiking boots at 7 AM. There’s something genuinely refreshing about a place where the lobby smells faintly of pine and wet hiking gear instead of artificial air fresheners – it tells you everything about who stays here and why.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the trails. Not just the obvious ones everyone does, but they pointed me toward this lesser-known path that connects to the green trail near Bilíkova chata. The kind of tip you’d get from a local, not from someone reading off a tourist pamphlet. The rooms are honestly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – clean, comfortable beds, decent WiFi (which matters more than you’d think when you’re planning next day’s hikes), and windows that actually open so you can hear the forest at night. The shower pressure was surprisingly good, which anyone who’s done a long day in the Tatras will appreciate.

I will say the walls are a bit thin – you’ll hear your neighbors if they’re early risers, but then again, most people here are up before dawn anyway to catch the first lift or beat the crowds on popular trails. The breakfast situation is pretty straightforward, nothing fancy but plenty of fuel for a day out. They do this hearty Slovak spread with proper bread and local cheese that hits the spot when you’re about to spend eight hours hiking.

The whole area gets absolutely packed during peak season (July-August and ski season), but Podlesanka somehow maintains this quiet, almost understated vibe. Maybe it’s because it attracts more serious hikers than casual tourists – the kind of people who come here for the Rysy summit or the Skok waterfall circuit, not just to take photos. The front desk actually keeps trail conditions posted, which is more useful than any fancy concierge service.

Look, if you’re expecting spa treatments or a rooftop bar, you’re in the wrong place entirely. But if you want a comfortable base that understands why you’re really here – to get into those mountains as easily and efficiently as possible – then Podlesanka just makes sense. It’s the kind of place that grows on you, especially when you’re sitting on your small balcony after a long day, watching the peaks catch the last light, and you realize you’ve found exactly what you didn’t know you were looking for.
