Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Pod palmou Gerlachov on Mlynská street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the ratings don’t tell the whole story, and this little gem in Gerlachov absolutely proves that point. The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about this place – it’s not just another cookie-cutter hotel throwing around fancy promises they can’t keep.

What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area. I mean, they didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map and wish me luck. The woman at the front desk (I think her name was Marta) actually sketched out a little route to the best hiking trails and mentioned which bakery opens earliest if you’re planning an early mountain start. That’s the kind of local insight you just can’t Google, you know? The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but honestly, when you’re this close to the High Tatras, you’re not spending much time indoors anyway. I actually appreciated that they kept things simple rather than cramming in a bunch of unnecessary “amenities” that just jack up the price. The beds are solid, the shower has decent pressure, and there’s enough space to spread out your hiking gear without tripping over everything.

Here’s what I really loved though – the location is just perfect for anyone who wants to explore the mountains without dealing with the circus that some of the more touristy spots become. Gerlachov sits in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to all the major trails and attractions, but far enough from the madness that you can actually hear yourself think. Parking was never an issue (which, trust me, is a big deal around here during peak season), and I could walk to a couple of decent restaurants when I didn’t feel like driving. The whole vibe is just… relaxed, I guess? Like, the kind of place where you can come back muddy from a day hike and nobody’s going to give you dirty looks in the lobby. Actually, that happened to me on day three – completely covered in mud after an unexpected downpour near Skalnaté pleso – and the desk clerk just smiled and offered me a towel. That’s when I knew this place got it right.
