The moment you pull up to number 27 – and yes, parking is easy here, none of that city hotel nonsense – you get this immediate sense that someone really thought about what travelers actually want. The building itself has that mountain lodge feel without being too rustic, if that makes sense. Four stars feels right; it’s polished but not pretentious. What really got me was how quiet it is at night. You’re surrounded by actual forest (hence the name), so instead of traffic, you fall asleep to… well, nothing. Pure silence. During peak season in summer, you might hear other guests on the terrace, but even then it’s never overwhelming.

The staff here – and I’ve stayed at enough places to know when this is genuine – actually seem to know the area. Ask them about hiking trails and they’ll tell you about the unmarked path behind the property that connects to the main Dorna valley routes. They’ll also warn you (correctly) that the weather can shift fast in these mountains, even in July. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star, but there are these little touches that show someone’s paying attention – proper reading lights, outlets where you actually need them, and the kind of shower pressure that makes you want to linger. The breakfast… well, it’s Romanian mountain breakfast, so expect hearty local stuff alongside the usual continental options. Their homemade preserves are ridiculously good, probably from berries picked nearby.

What makes this place work is its location in the broader Dorna area. You’re about twenty minutes from Vatra Dornei if you need a proper town, but close enough to all the natural attractions that people come to this region for. The mineral springs, the hiking, the clean air – it’s all right there. The 9.5 rating isn’t some fluke either; you can tell this is a place where the details matter and the owners understand that good hospitality isn’t about flashy amenities, it’s about making people feel comfortable and helping them experience the area properly. If you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to actually disconnect and explore one of Romania’s most beautiful mountain regions without dealing with crowds or tourist traps, Piatra Codrilor gets it right.
