I watched other guests heading out for hikes before dawn, and by the time I was having my coffee, they were already halfway up the trails. The pension sits on this quiet stretch where you get mountain views without the tourist bus noise – something you definitely appreciate when you’re trying to sleep off a day of hiking. What really sold me was how the owners actually know their stuff about the area. Not in that rehearsed tour guide way, but like… they genuinely live here and can tell you which trails are muddy after rain or where to grab supplies without getting gouged on tourist prices.

The rooms themselves? Look, it’s a 3-star place and it feels like a solid 3-star place, but everything works and it’s properly clean. The beds are surprisingly comfortable – I’m pretty picky about this since I’ve got a bad back – and the bathrooms are modern enough that you’re not dealing with temperamental plumbing. Honestly, after spending days in the mountains, you just want hot water and a decent night’s sleep, and Penzion Petko delivers on both fronts. The breakfast setup is simple but they use local ingredients, and there’s something satisfying about eating proper Slovak bread and cheese before heading out to tackle mountain trails. Parking’s included too, which might sound like a small thing until you’re driving around Smokovec trying to find a spot during peak season. The whole place has this unpretentious mountain lodge feel – wooden details, cozy common areas where people actually hang out and compare hiking notes. I ended up chatting with other guests more than I usually do, maybe because everyone’s in that relaxed mountain mindset. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying with locals rather than just passing through as a tourist.
