You’re literally staying right in the heart of Horný Smokovec, which is the upper part of Starý Smokovec, and the views of the High Tatras from here are… well, they’re the kind that make you understand why people schlep all the way to Slovakia in the first place.

The thing about this penzión is that it feels authentically Slovak without trying too hard, you know? It’s got that mountain lodge vibe but isn’t pretending to be some fancy resort – which actually works in its favor. The rooms are clean and comfortable (I mean, it’s a solid 3-star, so set your expectations accordingly), but what really gets you is waking up to those mountain peaks right outside your window. The staff here actually knows the trails, too – not just the tourist stuff, but they’ll point you toward the less crowded paths if you ask nicely. And parking? Yeah, there’s space, which is more than I can say for a lot of places in the High Tatras during peak season.

What I really appreciate about staying here is the location – you’re walking distance from the funicular that goes up to Hrebienok, and the whole area has this old-world mountain resort feel that’s gotten a bit rare these days. The breakfast is hearty Slovak fare (lots of bread, cheese, and coffee that’ll wake you up properly), and honestly, after a day of hiking, that’s exactly what you want. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, and the WiFi can be spotty when it’s crowded, but there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on the basics and does them well. The 8 rating it’s got feels about right – it’s not perfect, but it delivers on what matters most: a comfortable base in an incredible location where you can actually afford to stay more than one night.
