Look, I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Penzion Kiska on Košická Street. The building looked pretty understated from the outside, sort of tucked away from the main tourist drag. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t need to show off.
The moment I walked in, I could tell this was one of those family-run spots where they actually give a damn about their guests. The owner – I think his name was Pavel – greeted me like I was visiting a relative, not just checking into another hotel. He immediately started telling me about the best bakery for morning pastries (it’s literally around the corner, by the way) and which streets to avoid during the morning rush when all the school kids are heading to classes. That kind of local insight is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to navigate a medieval town like Levoča.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to blend modern comfort with the old-world charm that makes this UNESCO town special. My room had these gorgeous wooden beams – authentic ones, not some fake rustic nonsense – and the bed was honestly one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in during my travels through Slovakia. The bathroom was spotless and had great water pressure, which… well, if you’ve stayed in older European buildings, you know that’s not always a given. I could hear the church bells from St. James in the morning, but it wasn’t jarring – more like a gentle reminder that you’re staying somewhere with eight centuries of history.
The breakfast spread was solid – nothing fancy, but fresh bread, local honey, and really good coffee. Plus, they had this homemade jam that I’m pretty sure came from someone’s grandmother’s recipe. I actually asked about it and learned they source most of their food from farms just outside town. The dining room has these big windows that look out toward the Spiš Castle area, and on clear mornings you can see the mountains in the distance while you’re planning your day.
Parking was surprisingly easy – they have their own little lot, which is a godsend in Levoča’s narrow streets. I mean, trying to maneuver a rental car through those medieval lanes is basically a nightmare, so having a guaranteed spot took a lot of stress off the whole experience. The location is perfect too – you’re maybe a three-minute walk from the main square with all the restaurants and shops, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with tourist crowds right outside your window.
I ended up staying an extra night because, honestly, the whole vibe was just so relaxed. The staff helped me book a day trip to Bojnice Castle, and when I got back they had recommendations for dinner that weren’t the usual tourist traps. That’s the thing about places like Penzion Kiska – they make you feel like you’re experiencing the real Slovakia, not just passing through it.
