I was honestly skeptical when I first pulled up to Pensiunea Simar on Strada Ștrandului – I mean, it’s tucked away on this quiet residential street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But that turned out to be exactly what made it special. The location is actually brilliant once you figure it out – you’re about a 15-minute walk from Sibiu’s old town center, but far enough removed that you won’t hear drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM.

The guesthouse itself has this understated charm that really grew on me. It’s not trying to be fancy (we’re talking 3 stars here), but everything feels thoughtfully done. The owner – I think his name was Marian – clearly cares about the place. He was there when I checked in around 4 PM, and instead of just handing over keys, he actually walked me through the neighborhood a bit, pointing out where to grab good coffee in the morning and which bus stops would get me to the train station fastest. That kind of local insight is gold when you’re trying to navigate a new city. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nothing Instagram-worthy but honestly more spacious than I expected for the price point. What really impressed me was how quiet it stayed – that residential location pays off when you’re trying to sleep.

Here’s the thing though – and this might sound weird for a 3-star place – but the attention to detail reminded me of much pricier hotels. Fresh towels appeared without me asking, the WiFi actually worked reliably (crucial for me since I was working remotely), and there’s this small breakfast area where they serve local bread and jams that taste homemade. I ended up chatting with other guests there most mornings, including a couple from Germany who’d been coming back for three years straight. That tells you something, right? The parking situation is straightforward too – there’s a small lot behind the building, which saved me from dealing with Sibiu’s sometimes tricky street parking. Look, if you’re expecting a spa or room service, this isn’t your place. But if you want somewhere genuine where you’ll actually sleep well and feel like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than a tourist bubble, Pensiunea Simar hits that sweet spot perfectly.
