So I stumbled across Pensiunea Pui de Urs Sirnea during what was supposed to be a quick stop in the Fundata area, and honestly? I’m kind of glad I got lost trying to find it initially. The place sits in Sat Ciocanu, which is basically this tiny village that most people blow right past on their way to the bigger tourist spots – but that’s exactly what makes it special. You know those Romanian mountain guesthouses where the owners actually live there and you can smell dinner cooking from the kitchen? This is one of those places. The name literally means “Bear Cub” and while I didn’t spot any actual bears (thankfully), there’s something genuinely wild about the setting that makes you feel like you’re properly in the Carpathians, not just visiting them.
What really got me was how the place manages to feel both rustic and comfortable without trying too hard. The rooms are simple but clean – I mean, this is a 3-star place, so don’t expect marble bathrooms or anything, but the beds are solid and the heating actually works, which is more than I can say for some fancier places I’ve stayed in Romanian mountains. The owners seem to know everyone in the area, and they’re the type who’ll tell you which trails to take and which ones to avoid depending on the weather. Parking is easy (just pull up wherever), and the whole check-in process is refreshingly casual – none of that formal desk nonsense. What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night; you’re far enough from any main roads that you actually hear the forest settling in, which is either incredibly peaceful or slightly unnerving depending on your comfort level with rural Romania.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore this part of Brașov County without dealing with crowds. You’re close enough to Fundata proper that you can grab supplies or a proper meal if needed, but far enough out that you feel like you’ve discovered something. The 9.1 rating makes complete sense once you’ve been there – it’s not luxury, but it’s exactly what it promises to be, and the hosts clearly care about their guests having a good experience. I’d definitely come back, especially in autumn when the whole area turns those impossible shades of gold and red. Just make sure your GPS is working because the village roads can be… well, let’s just say they’re more suggestions than actual marked streets.
