You know what struck me first about Pensiunea Novac? It’s actually right on Strada Principală, which sounds fancy but is really just the main road through Durau – and honestly, that’s exactly where you want to be. I mean, this isn’t some hidden gem tucked away where you need a GPS and a prayer to find it. You’ll spot it easily enough, and there’s decent parking right there (trust me, after driving those mountain roads, you’ll appreciate not having to hunt for a spot).

The place has this unpretentious charm that I wasn’t expecting from the photos online. Sure, it’s a 3-star pension, but the owners – the Novac family, obviously – actually seem to care about the details that matter. The rooms are clean without being sterile, if that makes sense, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. I slept better here than I did at some fancier places in Bucharest, to be honest. The walls are thick enough that you won’t hear your neighbors, though you might catch the occasional sound from the street in the morning when the locals are heading to work. Nothing disruptive, just… real life happening around you.

What really sets this place apart is how it sits in Durau itself. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the cable car station that takes you up to the Ceahlău mountains, and the staff will actually tell you useful stuff – like which trails are worth your time and when the weather’s likely to turn. The breakfast (which comes with the room) is proper Romanian fare – fresh bread, local cheese, sometimes homemade jam that tastes like someone’s grandmother made it. Nothing Instagram-worthy, but the kind of food that gives you energy for a day of hiking. The dining room has these big windows that look out toward the mountains, and on clear mornings – well, you’ll understand why this place has a 9-star rating from guests. It’s not about luxury; it’s about being in the right spot with people who know how to make you comfortable without making a big show of it. The check-in was smooth, the room was ready when promised, and when I had questions about local hiking routes, I got answers from someone who’d clearly walked those trails themselves. That’s worth more than marble bathrooms and fancy soaps, at least to me.
