Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Sibiu, and Pensiunea Maria honestly surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away on Str. Viilor – which you probably won’t find on most tourist maps, but that’s actually perfect because you’re away from the crowds stumbling back from the old town at 2 AM. The street itself is quiet, lined with those typical Romanian houses that have character but aren’t trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect.
What really got me was how Maria (yeah, there’s an actual Maria who runs this place) treats the whole thing like you’re staying at her family home, except with better linens and – thank god – reliable hot water. The building has this authentic feel that a lot of the fancier hotels in the city center have scrubbed away in their rush to modernize. You know what I mean? Those thick walls that keep things cool in summer, creaky wooden floors that somehow feel cozy rather than old, and windows that actually open properly for fresh air. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully arranged – there’s always a spot to dump your day pack and charge your phone without crawling under furniture.
Here’s the thing about the location that took me a while to appreciate: you’re about a 15-minute walk to the main square, which sounds far until you realize it’s actually perfect. Close enough that you can easily wander into town for dinner or drinks, but far enough that you can escape the tourist bubble when you need to. There’s a small grocery store maybe two blocks away where locals actually shop, and I found some of the best fresh bread there. Plus, parking isn’t the nightmare it is closer to the historic center – Maria’s got a few spots behind the building, and honestly, that alone is worth the slight distance from the action.
The breakfast deserves a mention because it’s clearly not some industrial operation. Fresh eggs, local cheese, homemade jam that changes based on what’s in season. I mean, it’s not going to win any culinary awards, but it’s real food made by people who care, and you can taste the difference. Maria’s daughter usually handles the morning shift, and she’s the one who gave me the best recommendations for hiking trails around the area – stuff you won’t find in guidebooks.
The 9.2 rating makes sense once you understand what this place is trying to be. It’s not competing with the boutique hotels charging twice as much in the old town. Instead, it’s nailing that sweet spot of genuine Romanian hospitality, solid comfort, and enough local character to make your stay memorable. The Wi-Fi works, the beds are comfortable, and the whole place just feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find. If you’re the type who’d rather stay somewhere with personality than somewhere with a fancy lobby, Pensiunea Maria gets it right.
