Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Pensiunea Himalaya on Calea Trotusului, I wasn’t expecting much. The address made it sound like it was in the middle of nowhere in Dărmăneasca, and well, it sort of is. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm.
The thing about this place is that it sits right along the Trotuș valley route, which means you’re getting some seriously beautiful mountain views without the touristy crowds you’d find closer to Brașov or Sinaia. The owners clearly know what they’re doing – this isn’t some thrown-together guesthouse. It’s got that solid 4-star feel without being stuffy about it. The rooms are clean (I mean really clean, not just “good enough for a mountain town” clean), and the beds are actually comfortable. I’ve stayed in plenty of Romanian pensiuni where you feel every spring, but not here.
What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from the main DN12 that you don’t hear trucks rumbling by, but close enough that getting to Gheorgheni or even Brașov isn’t a complete ordeal. The breakfast situation is solid too – they do the traditional Romanian spread but with fresh local ingredients, and the coffee’s better than you’d expect. The staff speaks decent English, which honestly surprised me given how off-the-beaten-path this location is. Parking’s never an issue (there’s plenty of space), and they’re pretty flexible with check-in times if you call ahead.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place you stumble upon by accident. You’re either heading to the Carpathians for hiking, or you’re one of those travelers who actually likes discovering spots that most tourists miss. The Himalaya works perfectly for both. It’s about a 20-minute drive to some really decent hiking trails, and if you’re into that whole “authentic Romania” experience, the surrounding villages are the real deal. No gift shops or tour buses, just regular people doing regular things. The pensiune itself has this relaxed mountain lodge vibe – not fancy, but you can tell someone cares about the place. Little touches like decent Wi-Fi throughout, hot water that actually stays hot, and rooms that don’t smell like old cigarettes or cheap cleaning products. That 8.6 rating makes sense when you consider you’re getting honest value without any pretense.
