You know what caught me off guard about Pensiunea Hilltop? The name actually undersells it. I mean, yeah, it’s perched up on Liviu Rebreanu street in Predeal, but this isn’t some bare-bones mountain lodge – it’s honestly one of those places that punches way above its 3-star rating. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there.

I’ll be straight with you – finding it the first time was a bit of an adventure since GPS gets wonky in this part of Predeal, but once you’re there, you get why they picked this spot. The pension sits just far enough from the main tourist crush around the train station (maybe a 10-minute walk) that you actually sleep through the night, but close enough that you’re not hiking with your luggage. The owners clearly know their stuff about what travelers actually need – there’s proper parking that doesn’t involve parallel parking on a mountain road, which anyone who’s driven in Romanian mountain towns will appreciate.

What really gets me is how they’ve nailed the details that bigger hotels often mess up. The rooms have that solid, quiet feel you want after a day hiking in the Bucegi Mountains, and honestly, the beds are better than what I’ve found at some fancy Bucharest hotels. The breakfast setup isn’t trying to be some grand buffet – it’s just really good local stuff that actually fills you up before you head out. I stayed there during shoulder season in October, and while some places in Predeal feel half-closed that time of year, Hilltop felt fully operational and welcoming. The heating worked perfectly too, which matters when you’re dealing with those crisp mountain mornings. What I really loved was how the family running it seems to genuinely care about the place – not in that over-the-top hospitality way that feels forced, but more like they’re proud of what they’ve built and want you to have a good time. They know the hiking trails, they know which restaurants in town are worth your time (and which ones are tourist traps), and they’re not trying to oversell you on activities. It’s the kind of place where you check in planning to stay two nights and end up extending because it just works. For what you pay – and Predeal isn’t exactly cheap anymore – you’re getting way more than you’d expect from a 3-star place.
