You know what struck me first about Pensiunea Giulia? It’s tucked away in this tiny mountain village called Gura Izbitei – honestly, I almost missed the turn off the main road because Google Maps got a bit confused in the hills. But that’s actually part of its charm. This isn’t some cookie-cutter hotel; it’s a proper Romanian pensiune where the owner, Giulia, still greets guests personally and remembers your name by day two.
The building itself has that authentic mountain lodge feel – think solid wood beams and stone accents rather than fake rustic décor. My room was spotless (I mean, really spotless in a way that made me feel slightly guilty about my messy suitcase), and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. The bathroom was modern too, which honestly surprised me given we’re basically in the middle of the Carpathian foothills. What really got me though was sitting on the small balcony in the morning with coffee, watching the mist roll off the mountains. You can actually hear the Argeș River from some rooms – it’s this gentle background sound that’s way better than any white noise machine.
The breakfast spread is proper Romanian fare – fresh bread, local cheeses, homemade jams, and eggs from chickens I could literally see pecking around the property. Giulia makes this incredible cozonac (it’s like a sweet bread) that she just casually sets out like it’s no big deal. The whole place has maybe eight rooms, so you’re not fighting crowds for anything. Parking is right there (free, obviously), and if you’re planning to explore the Bucegi mountains or head to Brașov, you’re actually in a perfect spot – close enough to day trip but far enough to escape the tourist chaos. I stayed three nights and barely wanted to leave, which for a restless traveler like me is saying something. The 9.6 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s not fancy, but it’s exactly what a mountain retreat should be.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
