The moment I walked up to that unassuming building on Mesteacanului Street, I honestly wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s tucked away on this quiet residential street that most tourists probably drive right past. But there’s something genuinely charming about finding a place that feels more like staying at your Romanian friend’s really nice guesthouse than some sterile chain hotel.
The whole setup here is refreshingly straightforward. Giovanni (yes, there’s actually a Giovanni, and he’s been running this place for years) has this way of making you feel like you’re not just another booking number. When I checked in, he actually remembered my name from our brief phone conversation weeks earlier, which – let’s be honest – doesn’t happen often these days. The rooms are what you’d call thoughtfully simple: clean lines, decent wifi that actually works, and beds that don’t leave you with a sore back. I stayed in one of the upper floor rooms, and while you can hear a bit of street noise during the day, Mesteacanului is quiet enough that you’ll sleep just fine. Plus, parking is right there on the property, which if you’ve ever tried to find a spot in central Târgu Jiu, you’ll appreciate more than you think.
What really sets this place apart though is how Giovanni seems to know exactly what travelers need without being pushy about it. He’ll casually mention that the good bakery opens at 7 AM just around the corner, or that Thursday evenings get a bit lively at the nearby restaurant (in a good way, not a keep-you-awake way). The breakfast spread isn’t fancy, but it’s exactly what you want – fresh bread, local cheese, decent coffee, and usually some seasonal fruit that tastes like it came from someone’s actual garden. I found myself lingering over coffee longer than usual, partly because the small dining area has this morning light that makes everything feel unhurried. It’s the kind of place where you might end up chatting with other guests – I met a couple from Cluj who’d been coming back for three years running, which tells you something. Look, it’s not luxury, but it’s genuine hospitality in a city where that’s becoming harder to find. If you’re the type who values character over chain-hotel predictability, you’ll get why this place has such devoted repeat visitors.

We arrived there by motorbike in the pouring rain and immediately had a parking space under the roof. The owner offered us an ordered meal and a chance to dry off immediately. This is more than a biker can imagine after a hard ride in the rain. Btw the motorbikes parked inside the house under roof, so I really appreicate it!
