Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Pensiunea Funivia on Strada Bunloc, I wasn’t expecting much from this little 3-star place tucked away in Săcele. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not trying too hard to be impressed.
The thing about this spot is that it feels like someone’s well-kept secret. The owners actually seem to give a damn about the details, which is refreshing after staying at so many cookie-cutter places. I mean, sure, it’s not going to blow you away with fancy marble lobbies or anything, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the whole setup. The rooms are clean in that “my Romanian grandmother would approve” kind of way, and honestly, the beds are way more comfortable than you’d expect. I slept like a rock both nights I was there. The breakfast – well, it’s simple but they do it right. Fresh bread, local honey, proper coffee. Nothing fancy, but it hits the spot when you’re planning a day exploring the Carpathians.
What really won me over was the location, though I didn’t realize how perfect it was until I started walking around. You’re basically in this quiet residential area where actual people live their lives, not some tourist bubble. There’s a little bakery about two blocks down that locals hit up in the mornings, and if you’re into hiking (which, let’s face it, is probably why you’re in this part of Romania), you’re surprisingly close to some solid trailheads. The staff – and I think the woman at the front desk might be the owner’s daughter – actually knows the area. Like, really knows it. She pointed me toward this trail that most tourists never find, and it ended up being the highlight of my trip. Parking’s no issue either, which is a relief if you’re driving through the mountains. The whole street is pretty quiet, even on weekends, so you don’t get that urban noise that keeps you up at night. I stayed in October when things were winding down from summer, and it felt perfectly peaceful. The only minor thing is that the WiFi gets a bit spotty in the evenings when everyone’s online, but honestly, that forced me to actually read my book instead of scrolling through my phone for three hours. That 9.5 rating makes total sense once you spend a night or two there – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does really well.
