You know what struck me first about Pensiunea Comfort? The name’s actually pretty spot-on, which honestly surprised me – most places that call themselves “comfort” are trying too hard. But this little gem on Bradului street really delivers on that promise, and I mean that in the best possible way.
The thing about Sovata is that it’s not your typical Romanian mountain town – it’s got this unique vibe because of the salt lakes, and Pensiunea Comfort sits right in the sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything but far enough from the summer crowds that descend on the lakefront. Bradului Nr.20 might not sound like much on paper, but it’s actually perfectly positioned. You can walk to the main salt lake in about ten minutes (I timed it), and there’s this great little bakery just two streets over that the locals go to – the kind of place where they know your order by day three. The pension itself feels like someone’s well-loved family home that they decided to share with travelers, which I suspect might actually be the case.
What really gets me about this place is the attention to small things that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms are genuinely comfortable – not Instagram-perfect, but the kind of comfortable where you actually want to spend time there instead of just crashing at night. The beds are properly firm (thank god), and honestly, the shower pressure is better than my apartment back home. There’s decent parking right there, which if you’ve driven the winding roads up to Sovata, you’ll appreciate more than you might expect. The owners – I mean, I assume they’re the owners since they clearly care about this place – they’ve got this knack for being helpful without being hovering. They’ll tell you the best time to hit the salt lake (early morning or late afternoon, by the way), or which hiking trails are worth your time, but they’re not constantly checking if you need anything.
The 9.8 rating might seem almost too good to be true, but after staying there, I get it. It’s not trying to be a luxury resort – it’s trying to be a really, really good pension, and it nails that completely. The breakfast is solid local stuff, the common areas actually feel welcoming rather than sterile, and the whole place has this lived-in quality that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you’re staying with friends. Plus, and this matters if you’re planning to explore the area properly, they genuinely know the region and can point you toward experiences that aren’t in the standard guidebooks. I left feeling like I’d discovered something special rather than just checked another destination off my list.
