You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Casa Motilor on Strada Principala – I mean, it’s basically the main drag through Bucium, which honestly isn’t saying much since this is a pretty tiny mountain village. But the moment I stepped inside, I got that feeling you get when you stumble onto something genuinely special. The owners clearly put their heart into this place, and it shows in ways that matter more than star ratings ever could. The rooms are spotless (like, your Romanian grandmother would approve spotless), and they’ve got this perfect balance of traditional mountain style without feeling like you’re sleeping in a museum. What really got me was the attention to detail – thick curtains that actually block out the morning light, proper reading lamps, and radiators that work without making those weird clanking sounds you get at half the places in this region.
The location is actually brilliant once you understand what you’re getting into. Bucium sits in this gorgeous valley where the Apuseni Mountains start getting serious, and you’re basically surrounded by hiking trails that most tourists never discover because they stick to the famous spots. The pension is walking distance from the village center (which takes about three minutes, if we’re being honest), but more importantly, you can drive to some incredible caves and traditional villages within half an hour. I spent a morning exploring the Scarisoara Ice Cave – absolutely mind-blowing, by the way – and came back for lunch without feeling rushed. The parking situation is no drama either, which is more than I can say for a lot of mountain accommodations. What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re right on the main street. I guess there’s just not that much traffic passing through, and the owners have done something smart with the windows because I slept like a rock.
Here’s the thing about Casa Motilor that really sets it apart – it feels like staying with locals who actually care whether you have a good time. The breakfast spread changes based on what’s seasonal (the homemade jams are ridiculous, especially the plum), and they’ll give you proper directions to places that aren’t in guidebooks. When I mentioned wanting to see some traditional wooden churches, the owner literally drew me a map and called ahead to make sure someone would be there to unlock the doors. That kind of personal touch is getting rare, even in rural Romania. The place runs more like a well-organized family home than a commercial operation, which explains that 9.6 rating. Sure, it’s not fancy – the WiFi can be spotty, and don’t expect room service – but for exploring this part of Transylvania, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better base. Plus, at these prices, you’re getting incredible value for what amounts to a genuine cultural experience rather than just a place to crash.
