You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Pensiunea Carmen on Strada Principală – it’s one of those unassuming spots that could easily blend into the background of Bucium’s main drag. But honestly, that’s part of its charm. The building has this lived-in feel that immediately tells you locals actually stay here, not just tourists passing through.
The thing about Bucium is that it’s properly tucked away in the mountains, and Carmen sits right where you want to be if you’re exploring the area. I mean, you’re literally on the main street, so everything you need is within walking distance – the little grocery store, that family-run restaurant that doesn’t bother with English menus (trust me, just point and smile), and the bus stop if you’re planning day trips without a car. The owners actually know the bus schedules by heart, which saved me from a lot of confused Google Translate conversations. What really got me was how quiet it gets at night – you’d think being on the main street would mean traffic noise, but Bucium basically rolls up the sidewalks after sunset, and all you hear are the sounds from the surrounding hills.
The rooms themselves are exactly what you’d expect from a well-run 3-star place – clean, comfortable beds that don’t creak when you roll over, and bathrooms where the hot water actually works consistently. The Wi-Fi is decent enough for checking emails and posting photos, though don’t expect to stream movies or anything. One small thing that impressed me: they have these thick curtains that actually block out light, which is a godsend if you’re trying to sleep in during summer when the sun comes up ridiculously early. The breakfast spread is simple but solid – fresh bread, local cheese, decent coffee, and usually some homemade jam that changes depending on what’s in season. Nothing fancy, but it’s the kind of meal that sets you up properly for a day of hiking or exploring the nearby villages. The family running the place – I think Carmen herself is still involved, though her daughter seems to handle most of the day-to-day stuff now – they’re the type who remember your name after one night and will genuinely ask how your day went when you come back. It’s that personal touch that makes an 8.4 rating feel about right, maybe even conservative.
