Pensiunea Alexolar
You know what struck me first about Pensiunea Alexolar? It’s tucked away on Strada Principala in this tiny village called Mătişeşti that most people drive straight through without stopping – and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. I mean, you’re in the heart of Hunedoara County here, surrounded by rolling hills and authentic Romanian countryside that hasn’t been touched by mass tourism yet.
The place itself has this welcoming, family-run feel that you just can’t fake. When I pulled up (parking’s no issue, by the way – plenty of space right there), the owners greeted me like I was visiting relatives rather than checking into a hotel. The building’s got that classic Romanian guesthouse charm – not fancy in a flashy way, but everything’s thoughtfully done and impeccably clean. I actually spent most evenings on their terrace just listening to the village settle down for the night, which is surprisingly peaceful. The rooms are comfortable without being pretentious, and the beds are genuinely good – I’m picky about that stuff, and I slept better here than I have in some five-star places.
What really sets this pensiunea apart is how connected you feel to the area. The owners know everyone in the village and can point you toward hiking trails that aren’t on any tourist map, or tell you which day the local market in nearby Deva is worth visiting. If you’re driving through this part of Transylvania – maybe heading to the Corvin Castle or exploring the Retezat Mountains – this is the kind of place where you’ll actually want to slow down and stay a couple extra nights. The whole experience feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find, and at 9.2 out of 10, other travelers clearly get it too. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, which is refreshing when so many places are chasing Instagram-perfect moments instead of just being genuinely hospitable.
