Pension Tatrasport Zampa

Rating:
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first rolled up to Pension Tatrasport Zampa on that narrow stretch of Stary Smokovec, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little pension absolutely nailed it.
The thing about Stary Smokovec is that it’s not trying to be flashy like some of the bigger resort towns – it’s got this authentic mountain village vibe that feels, well, actually Slovak rather than touristy. Zampa sits right in the heart of it all, and I mean that literally. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from the funicular that takes you up to Hrebienok (honestly, don’t even bother with the tourist buses), and the pension itself has this lived-in quality that makes you feel like you’re staying with locals rather than just passing through. The owner clearly knows the area inside and out – they gave me these incredibly specific hiking recommendations that I never would’ve found in any guidebook, including this gorgeous trail that starts practically behind the building.
What really sold me on the place was the attention to detail that you don’t usually get at this price point. The rooms are clean without being sterile, and there’s actual character in the woodwork and furnishings. You can hear the mountain streams at night, which is either going to be incredibly soothing or keep you awake – depends on what kind of sleeper you are, I guess. The breakfast situation is simple but solid, and they actually accommodate dietary restrictions without making you feel like you’re being difficult about it. Parking can be a bit tight during peak season (summer hiking crowds and winter ski season), but there’s usually something available if you’re not rolling in at 6 PM on a Friday. I actually ended up chatting with other guests pretty regularly – there’s this common area that naturally draws people together, especially in the evenings when everyone’s comparing notes about their day on the trails or slopes.
The 9-star rating makes complete sense once you realize what this place is really about. It’s not luxury in the marble-lobby sense, but it’s that rare combination of genuine hospitality, practical comfort, and being perfectly positioned for actually experiencing the Tatras rather than just looking at them from your hotel window. The staff – and I think it’s mostly family-run – genuinely care about whether you’re having a good time, and they’re not shy about sharing local knowledge. They pointed me toward this incredible traditional restaurant about ten minutes away that I never would’ve found otherwise. If you’re looking for a spa resort with room service, this isn’t your spot. But if you want a comfortable base for exploring the mountains with people who actually know what they’re talking about, Zampa delivers exactly what you need without any unnecessary fuss.

Where to begin? Look I will be honest - we were really unlucky in that the whole time of our stay the whole area was under thick fog with the only possibility of sunshine and seeing the mountain being if you got the funicular up above the fog layer - but the funicular station is only a few minutes walk at the back of the accommodation and is a...
