So I stumbled across Pension Pantheon last winter, and honestly, it’s one of those places that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with the big chain hotels. It’s tucked away on Valea Lunga – which, if you know Poiana Brasov at all, is actually perfect because you’re close enough to walk to the slopes but far enough from the main drag that you don’t get the party noise from the bars near the cable car station.
The thing about this place is that it feels like someone’s really nice mountain house that they just happen to rent out rooms in. I mean, it’s got that 4-star rating for a reason – the rooms are proper nice, everything works, hot water never runs out (which, trust me, matters when you’ve been out in the cold all day). But what got me was the little stuff. The woman who runs it, she actually remembers your name and asks how your day on the mountain was. The breakfast spread is ridiculous – none of that sad continental stuff, but proper Romanian cheese and meats, fresh bread, and they’ll make you eggs however you want them.
You know what really sold me though? The parking situation is actually sorted – they’ve got a proper lot, which anyone who’s tried to park near the main hotels during ski season will appreciate. And here’s something most people don’t think about until it’s too late: the WiFi is genuinely fast. I was working remotely for part of my trip, and I could actually get on video calls without wanting to throw my laptop out the window. The rooms are quiet too, even the ones facing the street, because Valea Lunga doesn’t get the tour bus traffic that the main road does.
The location is honestly brilliant once you figure it out. Five minutes to the gondola on foot, maybe ten if you’re carrying ski gear and taking your time. But you’re also a quick walk to that little grocery store (the one next to the pharmacy) if you need to grab snacks or whatever. In summer – and this is key if you’re thinking about visiting then – you’re right at the start of some really good hiking trails that most tourists never find because they stick to the marked paths from the resort center.
I’ll be straight with you though, it’s not the fanciest place in Poiana Brasov. If you want a spa and room service and all that, look elsewhere. But if you want a really comfortable base that feels authentic and where the people actually care about whether you have a good time, this is it. The 9.5 rating isn’t just tourist enthusiasm – it’s because places like this are getting harder to find, especially ones that haven’t jacked up their prices just because they’re in a ski resort. I’ve already booked it for next season, which probably tells you everything you need to know.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
