Overview

You know, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Romania, but Papa la Șoni really caught me off guard – in the best way possible. When you first pull up to Aleea Jókai Mór (it’s this quiet little street that honestly feels more like a residential area than where you’d expect to find a hotel), you might wonder if your GPS led you astray. But that’s actually part of what makes this place special. It’s tucked away from the main tourist chaos in Borsec, which means you get the authentic small-town vibe without sacrificing comfort.

The “gastro-pensiune” part of the name isn’t just marketing fluff – they actually know what they’re doing in the kitchen. I mean, I’ve eaten at plenty of hotel restaurants that feel like afterthoughts, but here it’s clearly the main event. The owners seem to source a lot of their ingredients locally, and you can taste the difference. Plus, being in Borsec means you’re surrounded by those famous mineral springs, so even the tap water tastes cleaner than what you get in most places. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – nothing fancy, but everything works and it’s spotlessly clean. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from the main road that you don’t hear traffic, just the occasional distant sounds of the town settling down for the evening.

Here’s what really sold me on this place though: the staff actually seems to enjoy being there. Check-in was smooth, parking was easy (which, if you’ve driven around Romanian mountain towns, you know is not always a given), and when I asked about hiking trails nearby, they didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – they gave me actual directions to spots that weren’t crawling with tour groups. The 9.3 rating makes total sense once you spend a night there. It’s not trying to be some luxury resort, but it does what it promises really, really well. If you’re the type of traveler who’d rather discover a place that feels authentic instead of staying somewhere that could be anywhere in the world, Papa la Șoni is worth the slightly out-of-the-way location. Just don’t expect room service at midnight or a concierge in a fancy uniform – this is more like staying with relatives who happen to be excellent cooks and know all the best local secrets.

The name was familiar from Vama Veche, so we booked with confidence, knowing we wouldn’t be disappointed. We were lucky to get a room upstairs, where the unique ambiance created by the wooden logs added a special charm. The room was clean, warm, quiet, and had a beautiful, spacious terrace. The bed was large and comfortable, the Wi-Fi was fast, and the location was easy to access. We parked our car in the courtyard and didn’t need to move it again, as everything was within walking distance. Fontana Spa is practically just a few steps away.
The host and their small team of chefs are excellent. Although only breakfast was included in the price, we didn’t go anywhere else for lunch or dinner because everything was so delicious. They were also very kind, and when it came time to settle the bill, we were pleasantly surprised by the fair price. To top it off, the host generously gifted us with part of the cost. All in all, we had a wonderful experience and hope to spend another beautiful weekend with them in Borsec once our baby is born and we can travel again.

The property and the location itself exceeded my expectations! We had a 3-night stay in an apartment for 4 and we had an amazing time! The delicious food is what makes this place stand out from the others - fresh, local ingredients prepared by lovely people. The owner and the staff are kind and hospitable, they treat you like family. We fell in love with the courtyard, which extends to a forest behind - where you can find a deck with pouf chairs and have a relaxing time amid towering fir trees. The guesthouse is close to the Fontana Spa, you can get there in only five minutes on foot. The center of Borsec is also not far - you take the stairs down the street and you're on the main street of the town.

Excellent location, next to the Fontana Borsec spa. Șoni, the owner, is a great host who cooks amazing meals. The breakfast was delicious with home made hummus, zakouskis and liver pâté, among many other local delicacies. We also loved to chill out in the garden on the bean bags and talk to people. A great stay, will definitely come back.

The breakfast was excellent. You could choose from several options which was served in an elegant way. You could stay as well for dinner, the meals were delicious. The host is an exceptional person, source of information about culture, music, social life and finally good mood.
