Lunca Șimonului (don’t worry, GPS will get you there fine), you start to understand why they called it “On Top” because you’re literally climbing above Bran in this peaceful residential area that most tourists never see.
The thing is, everyone gets caught up in the whole Dracula castle madness down in the village, but up here? It’s actually quiet. Like, properly quiet – no tour buses rumbling by at 7 AM, no souvenir hawkers, just mountain air and the occasional dog barking in the distance. The chalet itself feels like someone’s well-loved family retreat rather than a sterile hotel room, you know? There’s this attention to detail that you don’t expect – proper wooden furniture that doesn’t wobble, thick curtains that actually block out light, and the kind of shower pressure that makes you want to stay in there forever after a day of hiking. I mean, the owners clearly live in this area and understand what travelers need because there’s stuff like extra blankets that are actually warm, not those decorative throws most places give you.
What really got me was the location – you’re maybe a 10-minute walk down to all the Bran Castle chaos if you want it, but you feel completely removed from it. The locals on this street are friendly in that reserved mountain way, and there’s something satisfying about coming “home” to your spot on the hill while everyone else is crammed into the village center. Parking is right there (which, trust me, is not a given in this area), and the whole setup just works. The view from the windows – well, it’s not going to be on postcards, but it’s real Romania, with those rolling hills and scattered houses that look like they’ve been there forever. Honestly, after staying in places where you can hear your neighbor’s entire phone conversation through paper-thin walls, the solid construction here was refreshing. Even in peak summer when Bran gets absolutely packed, this street stays calm. I’d definitely come back, probably in shoulder season when the leaves are changing and you can really appreciate being tucked away up here while still being close enough to everything that matters.
