Mountain Chalet – Cabana la Muntele Baisorii
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Mountain Chalet on strada principala – I mean, it’s basically the main drag through Muntele Cacovei, and honestly, the area looks pretty sleepy at first glance. But once you actually get inside this place, it’s like stepping into someone’s really well-kept mountain home. The wooden beams and stone accents aren’t just for show either – they actually keep the place warm during those chilly Baisorii nights, and there’s this subtle pine scent that follows you around (in a good way, not like some artificial air freshener situation).
The thing that really got me though was how quiet it gets once you settle in. During the day, sure, you’ll hear the occasional car heading up toward the ski areas or hikers chatting as they pass by, but evenings are genuinely peaceful. The owner – super friendly guy, speaks decent English if your Romanian is rusty like mine – mentioned that most guests are either here for the hiking trails that snake up behind the property or they’re using it as a base for Băișoara proper, which is maybe a 15-minute drive if you’re not stuck behind a logging truck. Parking’s right there in front, no drama, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. None of that corporate hotel clipboard nonsense.
What really sold me on the place was the breakfast situation – they do this spread with local cheeses and honey that’s obviously from somewhere nearby, plus bread that’s actually fresh, not just warmed up from yesterday. The dining area has these big windows that look out toward the forest, and if you’re up early enough (which, let’s be honest, the mountain air kind of forces you to be), you can sometimes spot deer picking their way through the trees. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable – not fancy, but everything works and the beds are surprisingly good for a 3-star place. The bathroom was hot water reliable, which honestly is sometimes a gamble in more remote Romanian mountain spots. I will say the WiFi can be a bit spotty, but that’s probably more of a regional thing than a hotel thing, and honestly, it’s kind of nice to disconnect a bit. For the price point and that 9.8 rating, it really does deliver on being a proper mountain retreat without any of the pretentious boutique hotel attitude you sometimes get in more touristy areas.
