It’s tucked away in this tiny commune in Gorj County, the kind of place where you might drive right past if you’re not paying attention. But honestly? This little gem completely changed my perspective on what a roadside motel can be.

The thing about Calnic is that it’s perfectly positioned if you’re exploring the Oltenia region – I mean, you’re close enough to hit the monasteries around Târgu Jiu without dealing with city traffic, and the Carpathian foothills are right there when you want to escape into nature. The motel sits on Sat Pieptani, which sounds fancy but is really just the main road through this quiet agricultural area. You know what I loved though? The complete silence at night. No highway noise, no city hum – just the occasional cow in the distance and maybe some night birds. Actually helped me sleep better than I have in months.

The rooms are simple but thoughtfully done – clean lines, decent Wi-Fi (surprisingly good for rural Romania), and bathrooms that actually work properly. The owners clearly care about details that matter to travelers. Hot water pressure was excellent, which honestly surprised me given how remote this feels. Parking is right outside your door, which is clutch when you’re road-tripping with a car full of hiking gear. I stayed during late spring when the fields around the property were this incredible green, and mornings felt like stepping into a postcard. The breakfast – well, it’s not fancy, but it’s hearty Romanian fare that’ll fuel whatever adventure you’re planning. Fresh bread, local cheese, eggs from chickens you can probably see wandering around the property.

What really impressed me was how the staff genuinely seemed to want you to explore the area. They knew which trails were in good condition, where to find the best local restaurants (there’s this family-run place about ten minutes away that serves incredible ciorbă), and even helped me figure out bus schedules to nearby attractions. That 9.2 rating makes total sense when you realize this isn’t just a place to crash – it’s run by people who actually understand what travelers need. Sure, it’s not luxury by any stretch, but sometimes you don’t want luxury. Sometimes you want a clean, comfortable base where you can recharge between adventures, where the price doesn’t make you wince, and where you feel like you’re experiencing authentic Romania rather than some sanitized tourist version. Motel Azur delivers on all of that surprisingly well.
