Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places around Romania’s mountain regions, but Moon Lake Bicaz – Casa Imero genuinely surprised me. You know that feeling when you pull up somewhere and think “okay, this might actually be special”? That’s what happened here. The location right on Moon Lake is just… well, it’s one of those spots where you understand why people drive hours from Bucharest just to sit by the water for a weekend.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being pretentious about it. The rooms are properly done – I mean, you can tell someone actually thought about what travelers need, not just what looks good in photos. The beds are comfortable (honestly, after some of the mattresses I’ve encountered in Romanian mountain hotels, this was a relief), and the lake views from most rooms are the kind that make you wake up early just to catch the sunrise over the water. The whole setup feels more like a well-run guesthouse than a typical hotel, which I actually prefer. Check-in was smooth, parking’s right there – no hunting around the village for a spot like you get in some of these smaller places.
Here’s the thing about this area that most people don’t realize until they’re here: Bicaz isn’t just a stopover on the way to the Red Lake or Cheile Bicazului. The lake itself has this almost alpine feel, especially in the early morning when the mist is still hanging over the water. Casa Imero sits right where you can make the most of that. I spent more time than I expected just sitting on their terrace in the evenings – the staff doesn’t hover, but they’re around when you need them, and they actually know the area. When I asked about hiking trails, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic map; he walked me through which routes would work best given the weather and my hiking experience. That 9.5 rating makes sense when you experience this kind of attention to detail. The food’s solid too – they’re not trying to reinvent Romanian cuisine, just doing the classics really well. And honestly, after a day exploring the gorges or driving the mountain roads, that’s exactly what you want.
