You know what struck me first about MER Guest House? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street – Strada Nisipului de Sus – where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic. I mean, you’re still close enough to Brașov’s old town that you can walk there in about fifteen minutes, but it feels like you’ve found this little pocket of calm that most tourists never stumble across.
The B&B itself has that authentic Romanian charm without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The owners clearly live here too – you can tell from the way they’ve arranged everything, like the homemade jam at breakfast (honestly, their plum jam is ridiculous) and how they remember your coffee preferences after day one. The rooms are properly comfortable, not just Instagram-pretty. Good heating, which matters more than you’d think if you’re visiting in shoulder season, and the beds are actually firm enough that you won’t wake up with a backache. There’s this lovely little garden area where I’d sit with my morning coffee – it gets the sun just right around 9 AM, and you can see the mountains peeking through the trees.
What really sets this place apart though is the local knowledge. The family running it will tell you about the hiking trail that starts basically at their back door (it connects to the Tâmpa trails but skips the crowded main entrance), or which days the farmers market has the best cheese vendors. They helped me figure out the bus schedule to Râșnov – saved me about 20 euros compared to the tourist taxi rates. The breakfast spread changes based on what’s seasonal too, which I appreciated. In late September when I was there, they had these amazing local pears and some kind of traditional Romanian pastry I can’t pronounce but definitely can’t forget. Parking is right there in their courtyard, which is clutch because finding a spot in central Brașov can be… well, let’s just say it builds character. The 9.4 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there – it’s the kind of place where small thoughtful touches add up to something genuinely special rather than just expensive.
